Speaker cables may be the mostmisunderstood audio components.Many believe that using heavy gaugespeaker cable is all that is necessary forsuperior sound quality, which is simplynot true. Using thicker conductors onlyreduces the amount of signal power that islost as heat (resistive loss), while it actuallyincreases the electromagnetic (inductive)loss that causes most of the degradationthat we actually hear from cables. Resistiveloss is less audible because it affects allfrequencies equally, while inductive lossis very uneven, so it actually changes theshape of the musical waveforms. Clearly, anoptimal speaker cable would minimize bothresistance and inductance to preserve asmuch of the original sound as possible.
